*Title: An Inhabitant of Carcosa by Ambrose Bierce
Date Read: 27 October 2008
Available Online?: YES
Briefly: Recovering from the delirium of fever the narrator of this tale finds himself in a long forgotten graveyard some miles from his home city of Carcosa. Worried in case he relapses into the same feverish state he seeks to find a route back to Carcosa. However the only person he meets at the graveyard, curiously ignores him.
Afterthoughts: Written in lavish prose this really short tale is a good one, albeit a bit too short. With a tale so short it’s difficult to offer much in the way of ‘afterthoughts’ without revealing the plot. Suffice to say that this is the second Bierce story I’ve read for this challenge (the first being The Secret of Macarger’s Gulch) and I enjoyed this, as much as I enjoyed that one.
Notable Quote: “No signs of human life were anywhere visible or audible; no rising smoke, no watchdog’s bark, no lowing cattle, no shouts of children at play — nothing but that dismal burial-place with its air of mystery and dread, due to my own disordered brain.”
