I couldn’t agree with you more about Gruen’s exquisite success at delivering a snapshot of the sadness of the Depression – a definite highlight!

I too adored this book. (I probably egged you on about reading it over on the AS forum.) It was one of those literal “couldn’t put it down” novels that make me behind on sleep because I stay up too late reading. Gruen evokes the underlying sadness of the Depression era even in this odd microcosm of life in the circus.

As a rule I don’t really reread books (too many to read the first time!), but this is one I’d seriously consider rereading … and soon. Reading your review and these comments reminds me how much I enjoyed this one.

For me, the best part of this book was how effectively it evoked the atmosphere of the circus – completely absorbing!
