Short Story Recommendation – The Iron Shroud by William Mudford

Anyone interested in short stories (especially those engaged in my 100 Shorts of Short reading challenge) may be interested in adding The Iron Shroud by William Mudford (available online here) to their list.

I came across a recommendation for it earlier while stealing a read of a couple of chapters of Sixpence House. Of this short story, which was apparently first published in Blackwood’s Magazine (which incidentally was published in Edinburgh, only a short 10 miles from me), Paul Collins says:

“In it, a prisoner locked in a dungeon comes to believe that, with each passing day, his cell is shrinking ever so slightly. So he strikes upon a cunning system of placing straws across the floor to prove it: the walls were closing in.”

With a synopsis like that how could you not read this short story? *grins* Added to my reading list!

About Rob

Rob, a self-confessed bibliophile, is without any hope of rehabilitation. He gets unnaturally excited over anything book-shaped, and if book sniffing were a crime then he would have been locked up years ago (which wouldn't bother him in the slightest provided his cell was lined with books)
