‘Book Bites’ for Wednesday 25nd Feb 2009

Jan Morris’ foreword for One Moonlit Night – Canongate have just posted the foreword from the next book in my reading pile, Canongate’s recently released One Moonlit Night by Caradog Prichard. It’s a beautifully written piece by British historian Jan Morris CBE, author of the novel Hav, and it’s well worth the ten minutes of your time it would take to read it. It not only goes into a few details about the author, whose life the chief protagonist in the novel is obviously based around, it also sets the novel up nicely. A few minor spoilers maybe, but only enough to peak one’s interest.

Writers on Artists series – The Guardian: Books is currently running an interesting online audio slide-show series on writers talking about selected works of art at London’s Courtauld Gallery. Want to know what Philip Pullman has to say about Manet’s A Bar at the Folies-Bergère or what Gillian Beer sees when she looks at Vanessa Bell’s A Conversation? Then this is definitely the thing for you. The series runs all week, is currently on part 3 of 6, with today’s featured author Colm Tóibín, discussing Cézanne’s Route Tournante. Highly recommended!

About Rob

Rob, a self-confessed bibliophile, is without any hope of rehabilitation. He gets unnaturally excited over anything book-shaped, and if book sniffing were a crime then he would have been locked up years ago (which wouldn't bother him in the slightest provided his cell was lined with books)
