Bookshelf of the Week: AGMK’s Bookcase Door

For this week’s Bookshelf of the Week I thought I’d feature a shot of agmk’s bookcases. They’re something else aren’t they? What do you mean they’re nothing special? Ahhhhh…but therein these bookcases lies a secret. Are you ready for it?

Now that’s got you all a bit more interested hasn’t it? :o). I’ve always loved the hidden door in the bookcase idea (cliched as it is), but I’ve always thought them to be the feature of old country houses and Gothic castles, but as AGMK demonstrates so eloquently – absolutely not!

Great job AGMK, and if Mrs. Rob starts shouting at me for ‘bookcasing’ off all of the doorways, then I know who to send her too. Thanks for the shots!

About Rob

Rob, a self-confessed bibliophile, is without any hope of rehabilitation. He gets unnaturally excited over anything book-shaped, and if book sniffing were a crime then he would have been locked up years ago (which wouldn't bother him in the slightest provided his cell was lined with books).

  1. I want one of these so bad it hurts!

  2. brittney says:

I definitely need one of these…or several. Thanks for sharing, Rob!

  3. Thanks for the post and the nice comments 🙂

I can’t take full credit though. It was fully a 50/50 effort with my girlfriend 🙂

@Memory/Brittney – Looks like it’s easy enough ladies. Look up ^ Agmk tells us he did it with his girlfriend.

@agmk – Thanks for stopping by. I’m glad you like the post. So you created this yourself, with the help of your girlfriend? Any special tools or hinges? Tell us more. We crave enlightenment :o)

  5. I remember the library in a Romanian castle had one of these, but the way to distinguish it among the dozens of bookcases was that it had one shelf more than all the others. And it led straight back to the king’s bedroom.

All right, I admit it. I want this.

  6. Pretty nice indeed. I especially appreciate the proximity of the Jack Daniel’s with the books… (and also the various board games)/
Is this your reading/living room? It looks very cool.

  7. Nothing special. Ikea bookshelves. Casters (wheels) on the based. Hinges. A hard surface to roll on.

The only tricky bit is in the ‘bar’ shelf. Its angled inward to give more room for the door to open, while being flush when closed.

Take a look at the flickr feed. There are close ups of the hinges and of the rolling base.

Thanks for the extra info agmk. I esepcially like the ‘nothing special’ bit. Accessible to all. Yay! :o)
