As you can see this is ‘The Longshot’, the very recently released (in the UK) debut novel from Katie Kitamura (published by Simon and Schuster ISBN: 978-1-84737-499-8).
It’s a novel whose story centres around a boxer’s build up and rematch with a legendary champion in Mexico. I’m thinking Rocky with a Mexican twist but I’m probably doing the book no favours by blindly comparing it to such a shallow movie.
I’m sure ‘The Longshot’ has a lot more depth, and If Tom McCarthy’s author blurb on the cover is anything to go by, then ‘The Longshot’ certainly does run deep. He proclaims:
‘Hemingway’s returned to life – and this time, he’s a woman’
Hehehe..isn’t that one of the best author blurbs you’ve ever read? It’s certainly one of my favourites, but now I can’t help thinking – has McCarthy set the bar a bit too high? Well that remains to be seen I guess, but I’ll let you know what I think once I’ve read it. For now I just wanted to find a way to get that superb quote out.

And the worst author blurb I’ve ever read is there on the front: “An extraordinary novel from a major new talent”. Clichedom abound.
says:
Haha Well spotted Bibibio, and I can’t even think of anything big and clever in response.
There’s nothing shallow about Rocky! It’s a great story expertly told.
In its time it was an extraordinary screenplay from a major new talent. Now whatever happened to the screenwriter after that?
says:
I’m sorry Daniel. I knew when I was writing that, that I’d probably offend someone. It wasn’t intentional, and I agree Rocky is a bit special. I guess I’m just trying to be a literary snob and failing miserably
)
As for the ‘screenwriter’ didn’t Stallone pen it himself?
Warmest
