07:00 – So there’s me thinking a story set around a worldwide pandemic, with dodgy dealings from a pharmaceutical company would be right up my street. Sadly however this morning’s serving from Ox-Tales: Water – Kaltes Klares Wasser by Hari Kunzru, of which the story follows this very plot, just didn’t click into place for me. A couple of well-penned instances, when the narrator describes his own sufferings of the illness, but other than that not an outstanding story for me. Sorry Mr. Kunzru
08:00 – I indulged myself this morning; another short from Ox-Tales: Water. The story this time was What She Did on Her Summer Vacation by the mighty Zoe Heller, and it’s a good one. It starts with a girl (on the fringes of adulthood), seeking help for a sick dog, and ends with something a lot more sinister. Have I said too much? Probably. But trust me this is well worth a read. Oh AND LOOK, for those who haven’t got the book already, the Times Online are offering the story up as a FREE online read. What a great bunch of guys.
23:00 – Yay I’m finally back into Sullivan’s Triple Cross (St. Martin’s Press). I didn’t get a lot of the anticipated reading I was expecting to late last night (dozed off – sign of age..gulp!), but I did manage to get through another dozen chapters earlier this evening.
You know what? This is actually turning out to be a really good novel. Sure it’s not got the literary depth of a Tolstoy or Dostoevsky et al. but that’s OK, because I wouldn’t have expected it to. What this novel does have though, is enjoyment written all over it. Tolstoy or Dostoevsky, Sullivan may not be, but he seems to be hugely talented at this thriller writing game. I only hope he can keep this up until the end.
