Reading Journal: Monday 3rd August 2009

It’s been a super busy non-bookish day for me today, but I wanted to start making sure that I didn’t miss out on posting a daily ‘reading journal’ entry. Thankfully I did manage one short from Ox-Tales: Fire (Profile Books) on the train, Into the World by Xiaolu Guo, so the day wasn’t a complete wash out.

I actually rather enjoyed Guo’s story. It’s about a young peasant from a mountain village, who comes to live and work in Beijing. He soon becomes a servant of an acclaimed scriptwriter, and it’s here, during this relationship, that the real essence of the story emerges. Another good thing about Into the World, is that it’s narrated from two perspectives – the servant and the scriptwriter. Ingenious stuff!

‘Reading Journal’ provides an unedited, on-the-fly record of the bookish highlights in Rob’s reading day.

About Rob

Rob, a self-confessed bibliophile, is without any hope of rehabilitation. He gets unnaturally excited over anything book-shaped, and if book sniffing were a crime then he would have been locked up years ago (which wouldn't bother him in the slightest provided his cell was lined with books)
