Rob, this post was discussed by "Juxtabook" recently and I made some comments. I posed some questions, but given some relate to you it makes more sense to point you to my posts on her weblog than guess what your answer might be!

Wow, you don't have ANY TVs i your house, Catherine? That's impressive. I still have a couple of TV vices, so I couldn't get rid of the TV completely, but at least now I have to go to the TV rather than it always being there at the side of me.

As for walk reading - have you ever tried it? You might enjoy the experience. It's certainly challenging at first :)

I don't do the planning bit but I heartily agree with the rest. We got rid of the TV in 2001. If I am desperate for a bit of drama I use the various catch-up players but essentially it means hardly any TV and lots of reading. I don't think I'll try walk reading though I do try and harness every other opportunity!

Linda, how wonderful to hear from you again on this thread! And a nicely expanded explanation on your 'multi-book' system. I think you're right, most people do read multiple books at the same time, in whatever form and concentration. I still can't help thinking however, that this practice does, to some extent, dilute the enjoyment of any and all of the books one is reading concurrently. That said, personally I seem to be able to work my way through short story collections without any feelings of detriment, but then again one does get a sense of closure on short stories, unless of course they're linked short stories *grins*
Anyway great to hear from you like I said. I hope you're well
Warmest

Howdy, Rob! I think many of us who say we're reading multiple books at a time mean something more like this: I've got a bunch of books on the go, but there is usually one that is the primary book, with the others languishing in the background until I finish the main book. But at times, if I'm just not in the mood for the main book, I'll pull a different book into the foreground for a day or two.

So really, if someone asks me what I'm currently reading, I'll say the main book every time.

I'm with you on the TV one Goddess. Not so sure about the 'multiple books' though. I do the same thing but am wondering if concentrating on one book at a time isn't a better way of doing things.
Warmest
