Herta Müller becomes latest Nobel Laureate in Literature

Herta Mueller A special day today in the world of literature, as Rumanian-born German author Herta Müller becomes the latest Nobel Laureate in Literature to join the prestigious roll of 105 past winners.

In a live web cast direct from the Swedish Academy, Stockholm, Sweden, the announcement was short and sweet with Müller’s being honoured for her work which “with the concentration of poetry and the frankness of prose, depicts the landscape of the dispossessed.”

A deserved winner I’m sure, although I shamefully have never read any of her work, most of which is published in German, with the exception of The Passport (Serpent’s Tail), The Land of Green Plums (Granta Books), The Appointment and Traveling on One Leg (Northwestern University Press). [EDIT: Stewart of Booklit and The World Literature forum has pointed me to another English-language title by Müller - Nadirs ( University of Nebraksa Press)].

About Rob

Rob, a self-confessed bibliophile, is without any hope of rehabilitation. He gets unnaturally excited over anything book-shaped, and if book sniffing were a crime then he would have been locked up years ago (which wouldn't bother him in the slightest provided his cell was lined with books)

There’s one other book, Nadirs, published by University of Nebraska press. I’ve got it on order.

Thanks Stewart. I’ll add that to my list. It actually looks to be rather superb.
