Bookshelf of the Week: Shawn Soh’s Tree Bookcase

Book Tree

For this week’s Bookshelf of the Week we return to the aesthetically sublime, and the Tree Bookcase; the creation of South Korean design artist, Shawn Soh.

Motivated to create products which are wholly practical yet artistically pleasing, Soh was inspired to create the Tree Bookshelf from an earlier memory of sticking letters on tree branches. From that memory the concept that ‘a tree becomes a book becomes a tree’ was born, and from there Soh created the Tree Bookshelf on which books ‘become flowers of the tree, and indeed part of the artwork itself in its day-to-day use.’

Personally I’m rather taken by the Tree Bookshelf. It has such a pleasing feel to it. And while it may not be wholly practical for the hardcore bibliophile, I think this is the perfect bookshelf solution for a child’s bedroom.

My thanks to Shawn Soh for bringing such a wonderful creation into the world, and to for first bringing the Tree Bookcase to my attention.

If you would like to know more about Shawn Soh, and to see more of her wonderful creations, then I urge you to visit her Design Artist website. More information on the Tree Bookshelf itself can be found on the product’s specific web page.

So fellow readers, will the Tree Bookshelf be finding it’s way into your own book-centric home any time in the future?

About Rob

Rob, a self-confessed bibliophile, is without any hope of rehabilitation. He gets unnaturally excited over anything book-shaped, and if book sniffing were a crime then he would have been locked up years ago (which wouldn't bother him in the slightest provided his cell was lined with books).

  1. Oh, my. I must have it. Eventually. It’s so beautiful. It would be simply adorable in a kid’s room. Thank you for posting this.

  2. Brilliant. I love how the books tilt and lean in different directions. Maybe “The Tree of Knowledge” for a name?

A worthy name indeed, provided it’s filled with books of knowledge of course 🙂

  3. Ohh, that has to be one of the nicest bookcases I’ve ever seen. “Tree of Knowledge” is definitely a great name for this. Another possible title (maybe?): The Nature of Reading.

  4. Oh. My. Goodness.

That is amazing! We book lovers DO like to have pretty bookshelves after all. 😉

And I agree with @Biblibio; “Tree of Knowledge” would be a great name.

  5. will this bookshelf become available in the states? would love to get one for my daughter’s room. thanks.

      Hi Calista,
I have absolutely no idea if this bookshelf is coming to the States. I’m not even sure if it’s being mass-produced. Maybe it would be best to contact the designer – (I think she speaks English)
      Hope that helps
