Oddly, given my reverence towards books, I’m always drawn towards bookshelves which can found outdoors, completely open to the elements. I’ve already featured the Honesty Bookshop at Hay-on-Wye, and the Brattle Bookshop in Boston, whose bookshelves are definitely open to the elements. And I’ve also featured a bookshop in Geneva where there’s a sliver of outdoor bookshelving to be found. So for everyone’s delight and delectation (or more accurately my own if I’m being completely honest), I present another for this week’s offering.
This is a shot taken by yennyo of the exterior bookshelves adorning the outer walls of the Libreria San Gines book shop in Madrid Spain. Don’t you just love ‘em? Yeah I know there’s the potential for ‘liquid danger’ in the form of rain. But who could resist walking past this side street without stopping for a browse of the bookshelves? Go on try it. Here’s the shop in Google Street View. See if you don’t walk by and ignore it
(and while you’re at it don’t forgot to check out the ‘user photos’ in Google Maps too, because some of them show the Libreria San Gines in various states of ‘dress’).
Joking aside though, this is a gorgeous shot, of what looks to be a gorgeous book shop. My thanks to yennyo for sharing it, and for giving me another external bookshelf to drool over.

And I’m grateful to hear good things about Madrid… it now looks quite an interesting city and I was always given to believe it was rather dull – guess other people weren’t looking in the right places! What a rather fab bookshop, and a great pic, cheers.

I dunno Mark. I think all cities have their hidden gems, no matter how dull they may look on first appearances. It’s like you say though – one has to look in the right places.

I think it would be fantastic to browse in the fresh air and sunshine.

I’m glad you agree Kristen.

Wonderful. There is one in Argeles Sur Mer like that, but the only other one I know is under Waterloo Bridge – which I’m sure you will have already visited.

Hi Tom,
Great to hear from you. This may be hard to believe – given I’m a native Brit – but I’ve yet to visit London, and the bookish treasure trove that lies therein.
