Chekhov Shorts: Ladies

Title: Ladies
Date Read: 13th April 2010
Briefly: School director Fyodor Petrovitch is facing a dilemma. Having promised a job to a long serving teacher who can no longer teach, Petrovitch returns home to find that his wife is insistent on him offering the vacancy to a man recommended by a close and dear family friend.
Afterthoughts: This is a short and snappy tale from Chekhov which plays on the whole concept of woman being expert in the manipulation of man (aren’t they just? :) ). Not a remarkable story by any stretch of the imagination, but one which offers a reasonably enjoyable reading experience.
Notable Quote: “I know, but for Nina Sergeyevna, I imagine, you might make an exception. She loves us as though we were relations, and we have never done anything for her. And don’t think of refusing, Fedya! You will wound both her and me with your whims.”

About Rob

Rob, a self-confessed bibliophile, is without any hope of rehabilitation. He gets unnaturally excited over anything book-shaped, and if book sniffing were a crime then he would have been locked up years ago (which wouldn't bother him in the slightest provided his cell was lined with books)
