Shortlist revealed for this year’s Edge Hill Short Story Prize

The shortlist for this year’s Edge Hill Short Story Prize was announced earlier today, revealing a rather eclectic final five in the running for the UK’s only recognised literary award for published single author short story collections. With the shortlist containing two screenwriters, an Irish short story specialists a literary ‘biggie’ and a relative newcomer, there has to be something to suit all short story reading tastes. Here is the shortlist in full (with links directly to the publisher’s websites):

Commenting on this year’s shortlist, competition co-ordinator Ailsa Cox, Reader in Creative Writing and English at Edge Hill University, had this to say:

We’re delighted by the quality and diversity of the shortlist. Some of these names are already familiar such as Jeremy Dyson, Rob Shearman and A.L Kennedy. A good short story is intense and exciting, sometimes sad and often very comic. The The five collections all have these vital ingredients – so I predict that judging will be difficult this year.

The winners will be announced on 8th July at an awards ceremony in at Blackwell’s Charing Cross bookstore in London. God luck to all authors and publishers

About Rob

Rob, a self-confessed bibliophile, is without any hope of rehabilitation. He gets unnaturally excited over anything book-shaped, and if book sniffing were a crime then he would have been locked up years ago (which wouldn't bother him in the slightest provided his cell was lined with books)

I had no idea there were so many prizes in literature! Well, OK, I knew there was but I’ve never followed them. It’s interesting seeing the shortlists for them, thanks for posting these!

Pleasure Amy. And you’re right, the amount of literary awards seems almost endless doesn’t it? This one’s important though, if you’re in to short stories that is.
