*Title: ‘The Pond’ by Nigel Kneale
Date Read: 03 October 2010
Available Online?: YES (Word format)
Briefly: Sitting deep in the corner of a field lies a pond surrounded by thorns bushes. And on this day as with many, an old man waits on the side of the slippery bank with net in his hand, ready to lure a particular prey.
Afterthoughts: From the writer known primarily as the creator of the fictional character Quatermass comes a fairly creepy tale which is very much in the ‘nature fights back’ kind of vein. And what makes this story particularly chilling – aside from its graphic ending – is the revelation of what the old man is doing with his captured prey. They say that there’s saner people in the asylums, right? Well if this character were taken as an example then that adage definitely holds true. *Shiver*
Notable Quote: ‘Come, come, come, come,’ it whispered. An old man, squatting frog-like on the bank. His words were no louder than the rustling of the dry leaves above his head. ‘Come now. Sssst
