Devouring De Maupassant: Abandoned

Title: Abandoned.
Date Read: 30th May 2011
Available Online?: YES
Briefly: Miffed at his wife’s recent random behaviour, Monsieur de Cadour refuses to go for a country walk with his wife on a blazing afternoon, suggesting instead that her male friend Monsieur d’Apreval accompany her. Hoping that this was what her husband would suggest, Madame de Cadour sets off with d’Apreval, to a destination of much significance.
Afterthoughts: A fairly standard story from Maupassant but a good one none the less. It’s something of a sad tale, but it’s one that ends with a tiny spark of warmness. Definitely one worth reading.
Notable Quote: I really think you must be mad, my dear, to go for a country walk in such weather as this. You have had some very strange notions for the last two months. You drag me to the seaside in spite of myself, when you have never once had such a whim during all the forty-four years that we have been married. You chose Fecamp, which is a very dull town, without consulting me in the matter, and now you are seized with such a rage for walking, you who hardly ever stir out on foot, that you want to take a country walk on the hottest day of the year. Ask d’Apreval to go with you, as he is ready to gratify all your whims. As for me, I am going back to have a nap.

About Rob

Rob, a self-confessed bibliophile, is without any hope of rehabilitation. He gets unnaturally excited over anything book-shaped, and if book sniffing were a crime then he would have been locked up years ago (which wouldn't bother him in the slightest provided his cell was lined with books)
