Story Title: ‘Brown Bag’ by Safia Shah.
Collection/Anthology?: Bristol Short Story Prize Anthology 4 (Bristol Review of Books)
Briefly: With her Mum dead and her ashes lying in an urn, Jennifer reflects on her mother’s passing and on incidental memories from the past.
Afterthoughts: A short and sharp and very English story from Casablanca-based Safia Shah, that captures something of the zeitgeist of our modern, Internet-focused age. The storytelling is adequate throughout, but the real triumph comes right at the end, where it’s sudden and completely unexpected.

‘Shot of Short’ #46: Phantom Pain by Lydia Peelle

I really enjoyed this story, not least because it reads like an ethnographic study of life in a rural American town, where hunting is a key feature.

Sadly I found this to be a very difficult story to read. It’s language, it’s lack of character establishment, and a real failure to engage me to any great depth, all left me feeling greatly underwhelmed.

‘Cheesus Christ’ by Etgar Keret

Cleverly, the multiple threads in this story converge to form a single story thread, where all affects each other. I’m such there’s a literary term for this kind of story but I’ll be damned if I know what it is. I’ll just settle for calling Cheesus Christ a very well engineered story. It’s not exceptional, but it’s very good.

‘Bitter Gourd Fruit’ by Ben Walker

The narrator wakes up with the feeling of a mild hangover. However, that’s the least of his worries because he soon realises that he is disabled from the neck down. Worse, he discovers that from the neck down there is nothing that can be disabled. You see he’s just a head – a living and breathing head – housed in an hardwood casket, aboard the steamship, Alpaca.
