Thank you Catherine. I reckon you should GO FOR IT! Am thrilled that Hollywood didn't tarnish the book for you, but I'm not so sure that the overpowering glitz and spectacle of Luhrmann's version will be so easy to shake from memory. How ghastly it would be to read The Great Gatsby after watching this film and see DiCaprio in your head every time Gatsby is mentioned *shivers*.

You know, Tender is the Night is one of the two Fitzgerald novels I haven't read (The Last Tycoon is the other). I have purposely ignored it so that I will always know that there is a Fitzgerald novel out there that I still have to read (I haven't read Steinbeck's East of Eden for the same reason). Of course, now that I'm doing this 'Totally' project I'm going to have to read these two novels, but I really don't know how I'm going to feel after doing so, knowing that there is nothing unknown is waiting for me, with regards to Fitzgerald's writing.
Anyway, thanks as always for stopping by Catherine.
Warmest

I love the idea of this project and if I had more time (and less - or perhaps greater? - writing aspirations) I might try it myself. I love the Fitzgerald corner and it is true the edition must be a joy to behold. I think it's time for me to reread Gatsby. I recall being very pleased that the strongest images for me from that book were not from the Redford-Farrow film but from my reading. I also remember being quite undone (*gobsmacked* might be more accurate) by 'Tender is the Night'. Looking forward to following this project and won't be rushing to see the DiCaprio version. Ciao Catherine

Yay, congratulations on figuring that out Maryom :). I'm sure you can take one of those falling apart editions and participate in just one readalong, no? :)

Ah yes...Zelda's only published novel. I'd actually forgotten about that. I guess it would be of much value to read it in a compare and contrast exercise. Be interesting trying to spot any Fitzgerald influences. I'll add it. Thank you x

Ha! I've found out how to comment (I know, it's taken long enough). You've almost inspired me to dust down by Fitzgerald paperbacks and join in - unfortunately they're so old, I think they may fall apart if disturbed. Dare I suggest an addition to your list - Zelda's Save Me The Waltz.

Dear Gary,
I tend to agree with you on this, very much so. And I think this is more evident in his second collection more than his first. He seems to have brought more maturity with his second collection, especially with stories such as 'Dark Lies the Island', 'A Cruelty' and to a lesser extent, 'The Mainland Campaign'.

As for Stephen Crane's 'The Open Boat'? I've never read it, but after such a glowing recommendation it seems I can't afford not to read it. I've taken note. Thank you.
Warmest
